Things to Consider
Fuel type:
Consider the pro and cons to each;
– Gas Grills are the most versatile of the options. With many different grill size and burner configurations to suit all your cooking needs
– If you have Natural gas in your home, connecting it to your BBQ can provide some great advantages. It is the cheapest of the fuel options and it will never run out right in the middle of cooking your meal. If you do not have a “BBQ Box” to connect to, you would have to have a gas fitter add one to your home. Natural gas BBQs also require a hose to connect to the supply box. These come in varied lengths which can be purchased from a dealer.
– Propane has the convenience of portability over Natural gas. If you tend to move the BBQ around, consider this over the restriction of a hose length. Propane costs significantly more per cubic ft of gas, compared to natural gas. A propane tank has approximately 169 cubic feet of gas per 20lb tank. This will give you about 7 hours of run time on a 60,000 btu BBQ between fills. MYTH: Propane cooks hotter then Natural gas. While it is true that the flame temperature of propane is slightly higher; Propane burners are usually de-rated to match the same BTU values as the Natural gas counter parts.
– Charcoal has a flame temperature approximately 1600 degrees Fahrenheit cooler then Natural gas and Propane. This will increase preheat times. They tend to have smaller grilling spaces over typical gas fired grills. The main attraction to charcoal is the smokey dry heat it provides which is great as a flavor enhancer and for creating that nice Caramelized exterior.
– Pellet grills (or smokers) have the lowest burn temperatures of the four. They are a true low and slow grill. They also typically cost more then the average grill; for the unit and the fuel. They excel at smoking, and have a range of fuels for imbuing different flavors.
Construction:
– This is possibly the most important point to consider when purchasing a BBQ. If you want your Grill to last as many years as possible, knowing what to look for is critical
– Stainless Steel will provide a unit with enhanced protection from weather and heat. Look for a unit that has as much stainless as possible. Any metals around the firebox that are painted will likely degrade at a fast rate leading to corroded and perforated surfaces. Bolts and screws that are not stainless will rust and affect the integrity of the Structure
– Keep in mind that not all stainless steel units are the same quality. There is a lot of truth in the phrase ” You get what you pay for! “
– If a manufacturer wont list what grade of steel makes up their unit, chances are its 408 or maybe even 430. It has a higher Iron Content which can lead to rust and corrosion. Take a magnet with you, if it sticks, move on.
– Some Manufacturers will get you with advertising “304 stainless burners!” Trust me. Its the only thing on the BBQ that is 304 stainless steel
– The best Manufacturers will use 304 stainless steel throughout the entire machine. It has excellent heat and corrosion resistance
– Don’t forget about the Lid! The poor lid takes the brunt of the heat during cooking. Avoid lids that are very light to lift. If it is, its likely cheep steel. If the lid is not high quality 304 steel, look to see if they have added a heat shield on the interior of the lid. It will keep more of the heat on the food instead of your deck!
– Look down under. Quality of the casters can avoid that raging curse fest down the road when you’re trying to drag the BBQ across the yard. When your in the store move the BBQ around. It should glide like silk! If they are locked down tight like fort Knox, then maybe look to other dealers for a better shopping experience!
Options:
– We all love a good gimmick. Those little things that give us a sense of value added. BBQ’s are no exception. Some may be more important then others though.
– Night lighting; If the BBQ has a light built in, it can really help when you have the winter blues or a late night hankering for steak, (or grilled veggies if that’s how you roll)!
– Some units have lighting features built into the knobs that change color when the gas is on. Or have multiple color choices so you can show Dave up with your sweet party trick!
– Side Burners can be more then just an extra shelf! Look for manufacturers with quality components like Brass burner caps, or infrared side burners. A good quality side burner can become a practical tool in your food prep
– If you really don’t want the side burner, then how about going for an actual extra shelf! Good manufacturers will give you the option to chose what you want. Having that extra prep space or sometimes a built in cutting board can make your grill time a lot easier. True shelves often will give you the option to fold both sides down. This can be nice if you have limited space.
– The often forgotten rotisserie should not be overlooked. When combined with an infrared rear burner, It creates a perfect, low and slow, self basting environment. Few can argue how awesome meat can be when done this way!
– If your outdoorsy folk, look for a unit that can convert to a portable grill. Certain manufacturers have portables that convert on a pedestal to a standard BBQ when your at home.
